Preparation for the ARDMS Midwife Sonography Exam
Ultrasound Certification Process for CM/CNMs
Administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), the Midwife Sonography Certificate is a prestigious credential that demonstrates proficiency in ultrasound imaging of the female reproductive system and fetus throughout pregnancy. This certification enhances professional credibility and underscores a commitment to excellence in women's healthcare.
Eligibility/Prerequisites:
To apply for the Midwife Sonography Certificate, candidates must:
Hold an active CM or CNM certification.
Submit proof of 12 ARDMS-accepted CMEs/CEUs/CPDs or education hours in OB/GYN ultrasound earned within five (5) calendar years prior to application submission. (ACNM CE credits are accepted). We have several options for ACNM CE credits here.
Application Process:
Apply at ARDMS.org/MYARDMS:
Pay the $300 (USD) application fee.
Submit required documentation within 21 days of applying.
Schedule Exam at PearsonVUE Center:
Choose a convenient testing location and date.
Exam may also be taken at home. Information is online.
Prepare for the Written Exam:
Review the content outline provided at ARDMS.org/MW.
Study to ensure readiness for the 2-hour, 100-question exam.
Sit for the Written Exam:
Complete the computer-based examination.
Note: If you do not pass, you can re-apply, pay the fee, and retake the exam.
Practical Examination Options:
Your practical exam cases may be started prior to passing the written exam. However, they are not submitted until after you pass the written exam.

For the Practical Examination, candidates must choose one of the following options:
Option 1: Submit documentation demonstrating successful performance/completion of eight cases across defined domains through direct observational assessments.
Option 2: Submit documentation demonstrating successful performance/completion of eight cases across defined domains through a combination of direct observational assessments and simulation. Three of the eight cases can be through simulation.
Note: If Part 1 of the written exam was passed more than 6 months ago,candidates must also obtain and submit proof of 5 new ARDMS-accepted CMEs/CEUs/CPDs or education hours in OB/GYN ultrasound
Certification:
Upon passing both parts of the Midwife Sonography examination (Written and Practical), candidates will receive their Midwife Sonography Certificate within 4-6 weeks.
