This course is designed to be completed at your own pace, typically taking about 10 hours in total. It provides a foundational understanding of POCUS ultrasound in a flexible online format.

Online Course Curriculum Highlights: The curriculum covers essential topics to prepare you for hands-on scanning, including:

  • Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and Scope of Practice

  • Cross Sectional Anatomy, Basic Physics of Diagnostic Ultrasound, and Bioeffects

  • Gynecologic POCUS Exams

  • First Trimester POCUS Exams

  • Second and Third Trimester POCUS Exams

  • The Biophysical Profile

  • Documentation and Liability

Two-Day Hands-On Scanning Event: Each group will consist of 4 scanning students paired with an instructor. Throughout the event, every student will have the opportunity to work closely with each volunteer, engaging in hands-on scanning. Our instructors, with years of experience in facilitating these events, ensure that each student receives an equal amount of time practicing ultrasound techniques.

Please note that the schedule may vary based on the availability of our dedicated volunteers who generously contribute their time to enhance your learning experience. We strive to accommodate their schedules to ensure a valuable and educational event for all participants. Please understand that last-minute cancellations of volunteers can occasionally occur, but rest assured that our instructors are prepared with alternative options to maintain the integrity and educational value of the event.

Additionally, while we make every effort to match participants with exact trimester experiences, particularly in the first trimester, please be aware that exact matches may not always be possible. Regardless, we are committed to providing a comprehensive hands-on scanning experience that covers a wide range of obstetric and gynecologic scenarios.

During lunch breaks, we provide an informal session introducing the Midwife Certification Exam. This is an excellent opportunity to engage with instructors, ask questions, and gain insights on confidently integrating ultrasound into your clinical practice.

Please note that this is a hands-on course which means you will be working with real patients. Each group is small so that each attendee can get hands-on scanning experience. Again, this is hands-on so you will be seeing patients consistently throughout the day.

Each student is required to have already taken our comprehensive online course which will be provided for anyone who signs up for the event.

If you have already purchased the online course a refund will be given after you purchase your hands-on scanning event ticket.

Is Our Hands-On Event The Right Fit For You?

Looking to level up your ultrasound skills? Our in-person course is tailored for women's health providers who want more from their scanning abilities. Whether you're only doing basic scans like locating the head and detecting the heartbeat, or you've picked up scanning skills on the job without formal training, this course is for you. Any skill ability can take this course.

Ideal for any women’s health provider preparing for certification exams or anyone wanting to officially bill for their scans, this course helps expand your practice by integrating both theory and hands-on ultrasound training. Dive deeper into ultrasound techniques and gain confidence in your scanning with our expert-led sessions. If you're ready to enhance your capabilities and want a mix of lectures and real-world practice, this is your chance to grow.

About the Hands-On Event:

Elevate your expertise in women's health with our Two-Day Hands-On Ultrasound Course, tailored specifically for women’s health providers. The course begins with an essential online component, focusing on the basics of Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS). This includes understanding the physics of ultrasound, which is vital for practical application during the hands-on segment. The online course is self-paced, can be returned to many times for review or clarification. It is the students’ course for a lifetime, including updates as they are made. You will need to complete the online portion before the event.

Then, join us at our hands-on scanning event, led by nationally certified sonographers and highly skilled faculty who are also midwives, nurse practitioners and obstetric certified nurses. The training provides a thorough breakdown of gynecological and obstetric ultrasound techniques. In gynecology, you will learn about the recognition of normal female anatomy, identification of common pelvic masses, and correct placement of IUDs.

The obstetric portion of our course covers a wide range of crucial skills. In the first trimester, it includes assessments of normal pregnancy development, gestational age determination, and the identification of complications such as ectopic pregnancies and failed pregnancies. The second and third trimesters focus on detailed fetal biometry, including assessments of fetal growth patterns and positions. You will also learn to perform and interpret Biophysical Profiles (BPP) to evaluate fetal well-being.

Our course goes beyond clinical skills, teaching participants how to master the controls (knobology) of ultrasound machines to optimize image quality and ensure effective diagnoses. Additionally, the course covers professional practice elements such as ultrasound billing and documentation.

With group sizes limited to four participants, our course ensures personalized instruction and extensive practical experience. This setting enhances learning outcomes and prepares you to confidently integrate ultrasound into your clinical practice. Join us to gain invaluable hands-on experience and become proficient in ultrasound examinations.

At the end of this hands-on course, the participant will be able to:

  • Determine the necessity of a full bladder based on the indication for the examination

  • Obtain a brief medical history from the patient as it pertains to her current clinical situation

  • Select the appropriate transducer based on the type of exam to be done and other needs or concerns of the patient

  • Complete a first trimester scan including gestational age assessment, fetal heart rate with M-Mode, confirmation of an IUP, documentation of number of embryos

  • Complete a second trimester scan including gestational age assessment, placental location, amniotic fluid volume and fetal position.

  • Complete a third trimester scan including the Biophysical Profile, amniotic fluid volume, fetal position, estimation of fetal weight, confirmation of placental relationship to the cervix.

  • Indicate when a scan needs to be referred to an expert in full scope sonography

  • Modify scanning technique based on ultrasound artifacts

  • Utilize knowledge of sound reflection as it relates to variations in tissue density

  • Understand the “knobology” of the ultrasound machine in order to create the best images

  • Identify and set the appropriate focal zone

  • Practice the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) Principle

  • Know how to manage cleaning and disinfection of ultrasound transducers and equipment.

This education activity will be submitted to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) for approval of up to 26 contact hours of accredited education.
